چکیده

When two persons participate in a discussion, they not only exchange the concepts and ideas they are discussing, they also express attitudes, feelings and commitments regarding their partner: they express interpersonal stances. Endowed with backchannel model, several virtual agents are able to react to their partners’ behaviour through their non-verbal behaviour. In this paper, we go beyond this approach, proposing and testing a model that enables agents to express a dyadic stance, marker of effective communication: agents will naturally coconstruct a shared dyadic stance if and only if their interpersonal stance is reciprocally positive. We focus on smile, which conveys interpersonal stance and is a particularly efficient signal for co-regulation of communication. With this model, a virtual agent, only capable to control its own individual parameters, can, in fact, modulate and control the dyadic stance appearing when it interacts with its partner. The evaluation of the model through a user perceptive study has enabled us to validate that the dyadic stance is significantly perceived as more positive (mutual understanding, attention, agreement, interest, pleasantness) when reinforcement of smile is reciprocal.

Socially-Aware Virtual Agents: Automatically Assessing Dyadic Rapport from Temporal Patterns of Behavior

This work focuses on data-driven discovery of the temporally cooccurring and contingent behavioral patterns that signal high and low interpersonal rapport. We mined a reciprocal peer tutoring corpus reliably annotated for nonverbals like eye gaze and smiles, conversational strategies like self-disclosure and social norm violation, and for rapport (in 30 second thin slices). We then performed a ...

A case study examining backchannels in conversations between Japanese-British dyads

Listener responses (called backchannels) and their effect on intercultural communication were investigated in eight dyadic conversations in English between Japanese and British participants. The findings of this study revealed several differences in the way each culture used backchannels: the Japanese participants used slightly more backchannels per interlocutor word, the British participants d...

Mirroring Facial Expressions and Emotions in Dyadic Conversations

This paper presents an investigation of mirroring facial expressions and the emotions which they convey in dyadic naturally occurring first encounters. Mirroring facial expressions are a common phenomenon in face-to-face interactions, and they are due to the mirror neuron system which has been found in both animals and humans. Researchers have proposed that the mirror neuron system is an import...

Towards a Computational Architecture of Dyadic Rapport Management for Virtual Agents

Rapport has been identified as an important factor in human task performance. Motivated by the proliferation of virtual agents that assist humans on various tasks, we propose a computational architecture for virtual agents, building on our own work on a dyadic model of rapport between humans and virtual agents. We show how such a system can be trained in order to build, maintain and destroy rap...

Contrasting Cues to Verbal and Non-Verbal Backchannels in Multi-lingual Dyadic Rapport

Diverse multi-modal behaviors provide important cues in establishing and maintaining interactional rapport. However, these behaviors are often subtle and culture-specific. In this paper, we focus on two forms of backchannel behavior: vocal backchannels and non-verbal headnods. We employ a corpus of quasimonologic story-telling interactions elicited from three distinct language/cultural groups: ...
